Six levels. One verifiable handover.
Commissioning is the audit trail that proves your data center will perform under load — from the first design diagram to the day operations takes the keys.
The 6-level commissioning framework
- L0
Design & Planning
Gray TagReviewing the Owner's Project Requirements (OPR), Basis of Design (BOD), and initial engineering diagrams to catch flaws early.
- L1
Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
Red TagTesting critical equipment — generators, UPS systems, chillers — at the manufacturer's facility before it is shipped.
- L2
Site Acceptance & Pre-Installation
Yellow TagInspecting equipment upon delivery to verify no transit damage occurred and that it matches design specs.
- L3
Component Installation & Start-Up
Green TagVerifying that equipment is installed correctly and safely energizing individual assets for the first time.
- L4
Functional Performance Testing
Blue TagTorture-testing individual systems under simulated full operational loads — often using load banks — to meet performance metrics.
- L5
Integrated Systems Testing (IST)
White TagThe 'Black Building' test — the entire data center is stress-tested simultaneously, simulating complete utility power failures.
- L6
Closeout, Turnover & Handover
Black TagCompiling final documentation, training the facility operations team, and officially transferring ownership of the live data center.
