Why the Northern Netherlands Is Emerging as a Data Center Hub
For a decade, the Netherlands data-center conversation meant Amsterdam. That's shifting north. The AMS4 saturation, the power moratoriums, and the sheer difficulty of getting new grid capacity into the Randstad have pushed operators to look at Groningen, Friesland, and Drenthe seriously.
The north-Netherlands thesis rests on three things.
Cheap, greener power
The Eemshaven cluster sits next to significant wind capacity, offshore interconnects to Norway and the UK, and a grid that — for now — can absorb new load in a way the Randstad cannot. That's the number that ends up on the total-cost-of-ownership slide.
Long-term PPA pricing in the north tracks below Amsterdam averages, sometimes materially so. For hyperscalers that need multi-MW commitments locked in for a decade, the delta is the driver.
Cool climate, real free-cooling hours
North of the country is meaningfully cooler than Amsterdam year-round. That translates into more free-cooling hours per year and lower PUE — the operational-cost side of the same TCO conversation.
For older air-cooled halls being retrofitted, the climate advantage is directly bankable. For new liquid-cooled builds, it reduces the chiller-plant sizing.
Fibre density is better than the story suggests
The perception is that leaving the Randstad means leaving the fibre. In practice, the Eemshaven-Groningen-Rotterdam-AMS ring, plus the transatlantic and Scandinavian landing infrastructure north of the Wadden Sea, means fibre density is competitive for anyone whose latency budget isn't Amsterdam-specific.
The staffing story is the follow-on. The engineers who service these facilities don't live in Amsterdam — and the northern operator community has been building depth for years.
